For everything that ends, something new begins…

Dear friends of Celtic Music Night at St Andrew,

I’ve made it back to California through the snow and blizzards of the North, and am so excited to remind you about Tomorrow Nights Celtic Music Night Farewell Party!!!! It’s going to be a blast, and I really hope you can make it, as this the final stretch of days before the big adventure where I head East…. but I must say:

THANK YOU SO MUCH! All of your kind words and good thoughts have meant so much to me as I continue to prepare for the coming voyage across the country.
I regret that there is not more time to catch up with all of you individually before I go, but the time is fast approaching, and there is still so much going on in the mean time.
There is so much I want to say to everyone, but one thing especially to all is Thank you for your support! Y’all keep me going, and keep the music flourishing!
I hope you to see you all at some point over the next week, as Celtic Music Night concludes until sometime this summer when I shall return on tour…
I so appreciate all of the giftings you all have given me in our time together, and thanks for coming out last week for the final concert with Rebecca Lomnicky!

My dear friends of Celtic Music Night at St Andrew,

THANK YOU SO MUCH! All of your kind words and good thoughts have meant so much to me as I continue to prepare for the coming voyage across the country.

But tonight would be an excellent chance!!….

Just as Celtic Music Night began all those years ago with her as our first official featured guest, Rebecca Lomnicky returns to perform as the final official guest of this amazing run of music! This is sure to be a wonderful night of Scottish fiddle and pipe music for you to enjoy, and it is our hope that you will come and fill up with enough tunes to last you until we return to tour as a duo this summer! Rebecca will be performing solo Scottish fiddle tunes from her title winning performance at Blair Castle, as well as from her album the Call, and together we will be performing music from Turning Pages and Inspired, as well as other new tunes. Of course we will follow the presentation with free refreshments and an open Celtic Music Jam session, and if you are interested in a fiddle lesson with Rebecca, let me know because that just might be a possibility! Hope to see you there!

Oh No! Say It’s Not So!

My dear friends of Celtic Music Night at Saint Andrew, I do beseech you to read this.

Words cannot express how much I have enjoyed being the host of this wonderful event and seeing you all every week as our wee community of Celtic Music lovers has grown and flourished… And as we are about to kick off another new year, I am writing this newsletter with feelings of excitement and bittersweet sadness. This announcement may seem like a bit of a shock to some of you, though it has been in the works behind the scenes for a wee while now– I have decided to relocate to the East Coast. I have come to this point in my life and musical career where I feel it is time to follow leads, dreams, and collaborations that have been calling me in that direction…and I am very excited about the opportunities awaiting me there, and as of this February I will be gone. This is however, a big step toward “expanding,” not “trading spaces”– because I love the West Coast so much and I would miss you all so terribly, I will be touring back through the West through the coming summer months and through the winter holidays…more on that below… but I hope that as fans, friends, & family you all will continue your kind support of my endeavors into the future… THANK YOU! And of course, I think we all, but especially me, owe a huge thanks to St Andrew Church for being such wonderful hosts to us, and supporters of the tradition… THANK YOU! This is the beginning of a new chapter of a very cool book– not the end by any means…and with a bit of luck and your support, there will be more Celtic Music Nights down the road.

With that, I am very excited to announce the FINAL Celtic Music Night Series (for now..) — The Late Winter Series… Starting this Tuesday!!!
This week, Tuesday January 3rd, 7pm, David Brewer– bagpipe & whistle music, and retrospective look back over a decade of Molly’s Revenge history…A Farewell to Pete Haworth. As you probably know, Pete (aka “the Admiral“) Haworth is retiring from Molly’s Revenge– the band he and I co-founded eleven years ago.  There will be an official farewell concert for Pete on Wednesday, January 4th at the Kuumbwa in Santa Cruz (visit www.mollysrevenge.com for tickets & more info.) and will be his last performance with the band– the last performance of the original Molly’s Revenge. Myself, fiddler John Weed, and guitarist Stu Mason will be continuing on touring at festivals this summer as the Molly’s Revenge trio with a cast of special guest performers. Intermixed through one of my last solo presentation here on the West Coast, at this Music Night I will be glancing back at the history of the now well-known band’s history with stories and little known facts… Of course we will follow the presentation with free refreshments and an open Celtic Music Jam session! Hope you can make it! Your support for the coming great voyage across the nation in the form of attendance, donations, cd purchases, volunteering to help me, leads or contacts for gigs and people to visit or stay with are much appreciated!!! All David Brewer Turning Pages and  Living Tradition cds on sale for $10 through January at Celtic Music Night!

Tuesday, January 10th, 7pm Glenfiddich fiddle champion, Rebecca Lomnicky, with David Brewer! Just as Celtic Music Night began all those years ago with her as our first official featured guest, Rebecca Lomnicky returns to perform as the final official guest of this amazing run of music! But, a glimpse of the future is promising… coming soon, news about **Celtic Music Night Series recordings released & available for purchase (pending negotiations with artists, and portions of proceeds going to artists, Music Night fund, and St Andrew Church deacons fund)! **David Brewer Music Lessons anytime, anyplace via Skype online! **summer lessons and workshops and Celtic Music Nights! **Molly’s Revenge at Woodland Scottish Games April 28th & Topanga Fiddle Contest May 20th! **Rebecca Lomnicky, David Brewer, and surprise guest at Santa Cruz Scottish Renaissance Festival June 16th! From a Black Friday to a Star-Spangled Tuesday!

Hello friends of Celtic Music Night at St Andrew… Happy Black Friday! Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Very exciting news about Celtic Music Night this Tuesday night!
This week, Tuesday November 29th, 7pm,
Master Irish harpist & bard extraordinaire, Chris Caswell will be our featured guest! Chris Caswell is one of the finest performers and builders of the Celtic harp today. There is a spontaneous flow to Chris’s concerts. The structure grows out of what is alive in him together with the atmosphere shared with his audience. In his “Quest for the Celtic Harp,” the listener may experience a trip into history, or into different cultures, or simply a light-hearted celebration of tunes and anecdotes. The beauty of an evening with Chris develops in the moment. That naturalness is a necessary element; an ever-evolving part of his art form, the underlying aim of which is to move us out of our expectations towards a direct experience of music. Chris is a raconteur, knowledgeable historian, and musicologist. His performances cast a bright spell through the music and his obvious delight in playing. His music is infused by his Welsh heritage, the world traditions of Europe, the Middle East, and the Americas. It’s going to be a fabulous conclusion to this series, so I hope you can make it out this Tuesday, and in the mean time, you can get a sneak preview: http://chriscaswell.net/index.html

And as Christmas is right around the corner, our ever joyously entertaining Molly’s Revenge Christmas Concerts are straight ahead! They are trying to raise ~5K and if they do not raise the funds needed to go, they will donate all of the funds raised to the orphanage. They performed recently at Celtic Music Night, and you all contributed so graciously to the cause that the goal is well on it’s way to being reached, and for that, the Balkes and the organization are extremely greatfull–THANK YOU!!! But there is still a ways to go, and this concert will hopefully put them over the edge and guarantee mission success for the orphanage… you can help, by coming out to enjoy a good fun night of music!! Background: Cornerstone Orphanage was started in 2005 when Pastor Juma John resettled with his church into the town of Nimule from a refugee camp in Uganda, homeless children came to him looking for help. Some had lost their parents in the war or by disease, some had been abandoned, some had been the victims of abuse. Cornerstone Children’s Home is the result of that church-based effort to care for the needy children of Nimule. Today more than 60 children are housed, fed and nurtured in a loving Christian environment. A building is nearing completion located on the same compound as the church, which provides a safe and healthy place for the children to live.
