Giving Thanks for Music!

Hello everyone… Happy Thanksgiving from St Andrew Celtic Music Night! It’s a wonderful week for getting together with friends and relatives to celebrate all the things we are thankful for, and well, that’s what I’ll be doing tomorrow night at Celtic Music Night as well–I hope you’ll join me! I am thankful for this wonderful style of music, all of the great musicians that play it, and friends who enjoy it, and for such a fantastic community that supports it! I know you’re thankful for that too, because the audiences at Celtic Music Night are always famously appreciative, much as they were last Tuesday for the Irish/Old-time duo John Weed & Stuart Mason. What a fabulous evening!
and Celtic Music Night continues This Tuesday night! This week, Tuesday November 22nd, 7pm with:
David Brewer–Tunes of the New World–That’s right folks, in honor of all of the explorers, settlers, and immigrants who braved the seas to come to the Americas with their instruments in hand and traditional music aplenty, I’ll be taking on a tour of the Tunes of the New World. This will be a collection of melodies composed in the long-standing traditional Celtic style by immigrant composers, settlers, and inhabitants of the Americas from the 1800’s through the present day. These melodies will be performed on a variety of Celtic instruments including (but not limited to) penny whistles, uilleann pipes, and bagpipes, and will set the stage for a nice relaxing & joyous Thanksgiving week. As always, the presentation of music will be followed by free refreshments of short-bread and apple cider, and an open Celtic music jam session– hope to see you!

Also, myself and several other musical acts will be performing in a special benefit concert in Salinas this Friday night: Fundraiser for Sudan Orphanage, “Music Around the World” concert with music by David Brewer, the Balke Bairnes, Erich Bloecher, Deep Treble, Tracy Luccketta & Taylor Kropp. Friday November 25th, 7:30pm at Destination Salinas (formerly Western Bible Store), 222 Main St. Salinas. Bradley and Sean Balke, of the Celtic Music Night guest band, The Balke Bairnes, have a unique opportunity to go to South Sudan to work at an orphanage to build a kitchen/school room, look into the possibility of setting up an Internet café to generate income for the orphanage, work on various projects, and to be taught by the children. They are trying to raise ~5K and if they do not raise the funds needed to go, they will donate all of the funds raised to the orphanage. They performed recently at Celtic Music Night, and you all contributed so graciously to the cause that the goal is well on it’s way to being reached, and for that, the Balkes and the organization are extremely grateful–THANK YOU!!! But there is still a ways to go, and this concert will hopefully put them over the edge and guarantee mission success for the orphanage… you can help, by coming out to enjoy a good fun night of music!! Hope to see you there 🙂 Links: http://www.cornerstone-friends.org/ http://fulaalifeline.org/cch.shtml Background: Cornerstone Orphanage was started in 2005 when Pastor Juma John resettled with his church into the town of Nimule from a refugee camp in Uganda, homeless children came to him looking for help. Some had lost their parents in the war or by disease, some had been abandoned, some had been the victims of abuse. Cornerstone Children’s Home is the result of that church-based effort to care for the needy children of Nimule. Today more than 60 children are housed, fed and nurtured in a loving Christian environment. A building is nearing completion located on the same compound as the church, which provides a safe and healthy place for the children to live.

Irish & Old Time at CMN Tonight!

Hello friends!

It has been really great seeing so many of you out at the many great music events that have been happening this month! And we’re keeping the good times coming with a fantastic Celtic Music Night at St Andrew lined up for tonight…

Celtic Music Night continues This Tuesday night! This week, Tuesday November 15th, 7pm, duo John Weed & Stuart Mason of Little Black Train, & Molly’s Revenge– Irish & Appalachian old-time fiddle, mandola, & song.

John Weed and Stuart Mason play traditional tunes and songs that explore the musical connection between Ireland and Appalachia. A classically trained violinist, John doesn’t let that get in the way of his fiery fiddling. Indeed, he leverages his understanding of the instrument to wrestle every last bit of tone and emotion from each piece he performs. Stuart is known for his strong, rhythmic guitar backup style using both standard and alternate tunings, and his songs are deeply rooted in the tradition. Here’s a sneak preview: http://helmintoller.com/weedmason/ The duo is also very excited about their recent cd release of “Slow and Easy, 25 Essential Irish Tunes”, which is a special tutorial cd made specifically for people interested in getting into the Irish session tradition by teaching great tunes to play with others. These cds will be available for purchase! And we will have a jam session after the concert…:)

Also, this coming Sunday November 20th is St. Andrew Day Church Service & Celebration at St. Andrew Church, where the congregation with choir and myself and Scottish dancers will honor Scotland’s patron Saint with many fantastic traditions, including the ‘Kirking o’ the Tartans (blessing the many family plaids), special music, bagpipes, and Scottish country dancing, sharing with the children, and special refreshments in the fellowship hall before and after the service. It’s a fun and friendly day open to all, so I encourage you to come and be a part of the St. Andrew community and see our lovely host Church in action; we’d all love to see you that morning! Welcome around 10am, service begins at 10:30am, with festivities following at 11:30am. Again, the Church is located at 9850 Monroe Avenue, Aptos, CA. More info: http://standrew-aptos.org/index.htm

Fabled Fiddles and Pipes!

Hello friends of Celtic Music Night at St Andrew! Now that you have an entire extra hour because of the time change, please read on about all of the wonderful music happenings coming up for you to enjoy! 🙂

First off, I wanted to thank everyone who came out in support Catherine Fraser & Duncan Smith; we were treated to a truly powerful and spell-binding evening of music, and because of your generous donations and cd purchases, they were in fact able to return to Australia! I’m glad you all enjoyed the concert, as such a rare treat it was, but just remember that YOU ALL make it happen with your support; so on behalf of the artists: thank you! I myself would also like to give a huge thanks to Paula Jacobson for her help in coordinating this particular Music Night! And don’t forget, if you were still interested in purchasing their fantastic cd “Unity” which they were sold out of that night, you can still order it online at: http://www.catherinefraser.com/recordings.html

Music Night continues Tomorrow night!
Tuesday November 8th, 7pm, David Brewer– bagpipe tunes of the great Scottish fiddler composers.
Fabled piper from Molly’s Revenge guides you through a select repertoire of melodies on the highland bagpipes which were all written by the great composers of Scottish fiddle music. Many of these tunes, written in the 18th Century by the likes of Niel & Nathaniel Gow, James Scott Skinner, Peter Milne, and William Marshall are not often heard on the pipes.
