Sharon Took-Zozaya’s SELKIE TIDES, inspired by Scottish and Irish Selkie stories about magical shape-shifting seals, is much more than a dance. Rather, it’s a multi-faceted piece of dance theatre that includes able-bodied and disabled dancers; acclaimed gaelic singer Mary Mc Laughlin and her chorus; live traditional and contemporary folk music; Mathew Schreiber’s original recorded score; original spoken text; and projected paintings by Andrew Purchin. Selkie legends are archetypal metaphors for intersections between the seen and unseen in many areas of life. Many of them represent a way to integrate loss and longing, as well as celebrating relationships between the wild nature both within and also outside us.
